Is Unified Communications part of your collaboration strategy?
Unified Communications (UC) is a buzzword for the integration of real-time communication solutions that include Voice, Video, Instant Messaging, Presence and Web Conferencing grouped into a single seamless solution. It is a broad term encompassing the communication tools that provide a consistent unified user-interface and user experience across multiple devices and media types.
UC includes Video Conferencing endpoints as well as enterprise solutions such as Skype for Business and Cisco Jabber that serve to seamlessly connect your collaboration equipment. Even headsets and softphones (also called “soft clients”) – application programs that enable voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone calls from computing devices – fall under the UC pillar.
Presence – knowing where intended recipients are, and if they are available, in real time – is a key component of UC. For example, UC technology could allow a user to seamlessly collaborate with another person on a project, even if the two users are in separate locations. The user could quickly locate the necessary person by accessing an interactive directory, engage in a text messaging session, and then escalate the session to a voice or video call.
In another scenario, an employee receives a call from a customer who requires urgent assistance. UC enables that employee to call an expert colleague from a real-time list. This way, the employee can help the customer faster by eliminating unnecessary back-and-forth emails or phone calls.
As the above examples illustrate, UC frees up employees to instantly communicate with each other and clients using a range of devices, regardless of location. Therefore UC implemented effectively creates an efficient communication ecosystem in a particular workplace and provides the necessary tools that enable successful collaboration within this space, while simultaneously optimising business processes and increasing user productivity.
